Saraswathi Ranganathan
Saraswathi Ranganathan
Carnatic music, a classical tradition of South India, is anchored by the veena, a lute with 24 frets and two resonating gourds. Saraswathi Ranganathan grew up in Bangalore and first learned to play the veena from her mother. She is now a master of the instrument and founder of the nonprofit Ensemble of Ragas school in Chicago. Through the formal structures and rhythms of ancient ragas, Carnatic musicians build unique improvisations — but also reach for the universal. Saraswathi returns for more Lotus Blossoms engagements after standout performances in 2022.
